WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR VISIT
Learn About My Methods
I implement effective psychotherapy methods that foster non-judgmental care, safety, and self-discovery, both online and in-person (located near High Park, at 141 Roncesvalles Ave.). I draw from multiple approaches - mindfulness, cbt, act, trauma-informed, family systems, psychodynamic - and tailor them to your needs. My practice is culturally sensitive, racial justice allied, LGBTQ-allied, person-centred and strengths-based. Sometimes therapy involves practical solutions, and I assist my clients in developing tools and coping strategies for real-life problems at hand. Other times, therapy is a moment for deep reflection, and I can aid you in uncovering unhelpful patterns while providing a safe space. Therapy is an organic healing process, and together we will explore what works best on your journey to personal wellness.
“Loneliness does not come from having no people about one, but from being unable to communicate the things that seem important to oneself, or from holding certain views which others find inadmissible.”
- Carl Jung
ABOUT ME
I truly care about your well-being, and when my clients come to see me they get a therapist who always works from a place of empathy, compassion, and understanding. I keep up to date on the latest research and newest forms of therapeutic modalities to continue offering cutting edge counseling and psychological services catered to your needs.
I have certified training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy from SickKids Hospital, as well as a master's degree in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University. My broader approach as a mental health therapist is informed by academic studies in English and Philosophy, where I developed a worldview that involved noticing and examining thoughts and beliefs without judgment, exploring issues connected to meaning, existence, and ethics. My master's degree in Communication and Culture at York University taught me to see and understand life from a cultural, socioeconomic, and political perspective. This latter education helped me realize how our environment plays an active role on our mental health.
Ultimately, I am curious to get to know you and understand you, and look forward to working together on your path to personal wellness.
SERVICES
MINDFULNESS
Mindfulness involves paying attention, in the present moment, on purpose, and without judgment. I believe mindfulness is one of the building blocks of therapy because it focuses on truly noticing what is going on in our minds, bodies, and environment. Developing our awareness in this nonjudgmental way, can help us notice our thoughts, feelings, memories, beliefs, and circumstances from a place of greater acceptance - from this vantage point it becomes easier to see what our true strengths are. Non-judgmentally noticing what's going on in our selves and around us is not always easy, but the more we practice mindfulness, the easier it becomes.
COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) identifies the unique and reciprocal relationship between thought and action. There are times where what we think or believe about ourselves or our circumstances limit us and keep us from growing. CBT allows us to reexamine and reframe how we look at things, from a more positive, self-affirming and honest perspective. CBT includes setting goals, and in the process of achieving these goals, we discover things about ourselves we might not have known otherwise.
ACCEPTANCE AND COMMITMENT THERAPY
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a blend of mindfulness and CBT. From an ACT perspective, sometimes we attempt to resist and push down our negative thoughts and feelings, and by doing so, it can actually make things worse. In other words, "what you resist, persists." Noticing negative thoughts and feelings without trying to fight or push them down can actually help reduce and/or eliminate them, while also taking action and living your life in alignment with your values.
TRAUMA-INFORMED THERAPY
Certain experiences leave an impact long after they have happened, and sometimes these experiences continue to happen. Sometimes it is one event, or the accumulation of many things, that leads to trauma. Part of trauma-informed practice is to create a safe space built on empathy and compassion, and learn what may underlie anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsions, intrusive thoughts, and/or relationship struggles, amongst other things.
PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPY
As human beings, we don't exist in a vacuum, we are born and developed in relation to people and these relations can form patterns that continue into adulthood. Oftentimes, current challenges and struggles are rooted in early developmental patterns, though we may not always be conscious of them. Identifying these previous patterns, bringing them into our conscious awareness with compassion and care, helps us understand our present and ongoing relationship dynamics. From here, we can build a bridge towards new, positive patterns and more fulfilling personal relationships.
